Solar battery calculator: capacity, runtime and number of modules

Calculate the battery in your solar installation based on daily consumption, days of autonomy and depth of discharge. The result indicates the required usable and nominal capacity, the ampere-hours at system voltage, and how many modules would be required for Pylontech, Pytes, ZYC or Victron.

How to interpret the result

  • Range: For off-grid use, 2 days are usually sufficient in the south-east of the peninsula; in the north or in winter, 3 days. For self-consumption with grid connection, it is sufficient to cover the night (1 day).
  • Night-time consumption: If you’re not aware, it’s between 35 and 50 % of daily consumption in a main residence. You can view this on an hourly basis using your bill and your energy supplier’s app.
  • Power, not just energy: As well as kWh, the battery must be able to supply the amperage required by the inverter. Each 5 kWh module delivers 50–100 A; for inverters of 5 kW or more, install at least two.
  • Tension: For inverters of 3 kW or more, a 48 V system is recommended: lower current, thinner cables and more battery options.
