Residual current devices protect people from indirect contact by cutting off the power supply when they detect a current leak to earth. In installations with photovoltaic systems and charging points, there are nuances that do not apply to a conventional home.

What sensitivity do I need?

For the protection of people, 30 mA. The 300 mA versions protect the installation against fire, not people, and are used at the main distribution board or on circuits where there is no risk of direct contact.

Why does a charging point need a special residual current device?

Because the vehicle’s alternator can inject fault direct current, and that component saturates the core of a conventional AC-type residual current device, rendering it unable to detect a subsequent fault.

The ITC-BT-52 therefore requires protection against direct current: a Type B residual current device, or a Type A device with direct current detection integrated into the charging unit itself. See the protective enclosures for charging points.
