Inverters 12V to 220V
Which 12V to 220V inverter do you need?
A 12V to 220V inverter converts the direct current from your battery into alternating current, like the mains supply at home, and choosing the right one starts with a simple rule: add up the power ratings of the appliances you’ll be connecting at the same time and allow for a 20% margin. To charge laptops and small electrical appliances, all you need is a Victron Phoenix 250–500VA; for a coffee machine or a microwave in your campervan, you’ll need 1,200–2,000 VA; and if you want air conditioning or a power tool, go straight for 3,000 VA or more.
Pure sound, no matter what
All our 12V inverters produce a pure sine wave. A modified wave is cheaper, but it damages motors, fridge compressors and sensitive electronics: the savings end up costing you dearly. With a pure sine wave, any appliance works exactly as it would if plugged in at home.
Inverter or inverter-charger?
If your van, boat or off-grid installation is occasionally connected to the mains or a generator, consider a 12V inverter-charger such as the Victron MultiPlus: as well as converting power, it charges your batteries automatically when it detects an external current. If you’ll never be connected to the mains, a Phoenix does the job just as well for less money.
