Fronius Smart Meter: connection, configuration and how to limit grid feed-in to 0 W

The Fronius Smart Meter It is the bidirectional meter that enables the inverter to determine how much electricity the property consumes and how much it feeds into the grid. Without it, Solar.web only displays generation; with it, it displays consumption, self-consumption and surplus, and allows to limit the injection (required for self-consumption without surplus) and to manage loads such as the Wattpilot or the Ohmpilot.

The GEN24 and Tauro models support up to three meters; the Primo/Symo SnapINverter supports one.

Where is it installed?

The meter is fitted in the main distribution board, at the point where the circuit is connected to the mains (feed-in point), so that it measures everything that enters and leaves the property. If it is installed at the point of consumption (measuring loads only), this must be specified in the settings; the default setting is ‘feed-in’.

Phase order: L1, L2 and L3 on the meter must match L1, L2 and L3 on the inverter. If they are out of phase, the consumption readings will be negative or inconsistent.

Modbus RTU cabling (Primo, Symo, GEN24)

  1. 1. Use shielded twisted-pair cable (CAT5/6 is fine). Maximum 300 m.
  2. 2. Connect D+ with M+ and D- with M- on the SnapINverter (Datamanager terminals) or in the Modbus block of the GEN24.
  3. 3. Activate the finishing resistance on the meter (switch set to ON) if it is the last device on the bus. In the Datamanager, the termination switch should also be set to ON if there are no further devices.
  4. 4. Modbus address of the meter: 1 by default (the factory setting). Do not change it unless you have several meters.

Configuration on Primo / Symo (Datamanager 2.0)

  1. 1. Log in to the inverter’s web interface (using the local IP address or via Solar.web → Device settings).
  2. 2. Settings → Meters → Select Fronius Smart Meter → Position: feed-in point.
  3. 3. Tap ‘Check communication’: it should display voltage and power readings.
  4. 4. If communication fails: check the D+/D- polarity and termination, and ensure that, under Settings → Modbus, the RS485 port is set to “Meter” mode, not “Slave” mode.

Setup on GEN24 / Tauro

  1. 1. Inverter web interface → Device settings → Components → Add → Fronius Smart Meter (RTU or IP).
  2. 2. Assign the position (injection point) and Modbus address.
  3. 3. Save and check on Solar.web to ensure that your consumption and grid balance are displayed.

Limit the power fed into the grid to 0 W

For self-consumption with no surplus (or to limit consumption to the authorised power level), the inverter needs the Smart Meter to know how much electricity it is feeding into the grid.

Primo / Symo: Settings → EVU Editor → Dynamic power limitation → Power limit for the entire installation → enter 0 W (or the authorised value, e.g. 5000 W). Save. GEN24 / Taurus: Settings → Power Manager → Export power limitation → Soft limit → 0 W (or the desired value). The “hard limit” switches off the inverter if exceeded; leave it disabled unless specifically required.

With the limit set to 0 W, the inverter will generate exactly the amount of power the house consumes. On Solar.web, you will see the output curve “truncated”: this is correct; it is not a fault.

Common mistakes

  • Code 568 / no meter data: Reversed D+/D- cable, termination not enabled, or Modbus address other than 1.
  • Negative consumption or self-consumption of 0 %: meter installed in the wrong position or with the phases crossed.
  • The inverter produces 0 W when there is sunshine: The limit is active and there is no usage. This is normal.
  • Smart Meter IP is not displayed: The meter and the GEN24 must be on the same local network; check the meter’s IP address via its web interface.
