A 24V battery charger connected to a 220V mains supply is the backup charging source for motorhomes, boats and off-grid installations operating at 24 volts. When there is insufficient sunlight or the engine is not running for long enough, this ensures that the battery bank remains fully charged.
What amperage do I need?
The guideline is to charge between 10 and 20 % of the battery bank’s capacity. For 100 Ah at 24 V, a charger rated at 10 to 20 A; for 200 Ah, between 20 and 30 A.
If your battery is a lithium battery, you can increase the amperage without any problem because a LiFePO4 battery can handle high charging currents, and you’ll save time when you only have a few hours to charge it. With lead-acid batteries, it’s best not to exceed the recommended limits to avoid overheating.
Lithium and lead are not charged in the same way
The absorption and float voltages of a LiFePO4 battery are not the same as those of an AGM or gel battery. A charger with the wrong charging profile will leave the battery bank not fully charged and shorten its lifespan. Use in vehicles and in boating
For on-board installations or in motorhomes, a high level of protection is essential: there is vibration, damp and salt. The IP65 and IP67 versions are designed for this; the IP22 versions are intended for protected installation inside a cabinet.
If your system is also powered by the alternator, you will need a DC-DC converter, and if it is powered by solar panels, a MPPT controller. The three power sources can coexist on the same power bank provided they share the same load profile.
