Toscano Línea Electrónica is a Spanish manufacturer based in Valencia, specialising in electrical protection and control: protection relays, grid monitoring, motor protection and measuring equipment. Its products are commonly used in photovoltaic installations where the system needs to be protected against grid anomalies.
What does Toscano manufacture?
Network protection relays: devices that monitor voltage and frequency and disconnect the system when the grid falls outside the specified range. In grid-connected self-consumption systems, these are a regulatory requirement in many set-ups, particularly in installations of a certain capacity.
Protection of motors and pumps: relays that detect phase loss, overload or dry running, widely used in solar pumping and agricultural installations.
Monitoring and measurement: voltage, phase sequence and insulation monitoring equipment.
When do you need a protection relay?
In a grid-connected self-consumption installation, regulations require interconnection safeguards to isolate the installation when the grid fails or falls outside the specified parameters. In small installations, this function is usually built into the inverter itself; above a certain power rating, or where the distribution company requires it, a certified external relay is needed.
In solar-powered or motorised pumping systems, motor protection prevents a phase failure or dry running from damaging the equipment, which usually costs considerably more than the relay.
What else is included in the protection package?
A complete protection panel combines the relay with circuit breakers, residual current circuit breakers y surge protection both on the DC side and on the AC side.
In a rooftop installation, a surge arrester is not optional: a nearby storm can render an inverter worth several thousand euros inoperable.
