48V to 220V battery chargers

A 48V battery charger powered by a 220V mains supply enables a 48-volt battery bank to be recharged when solar generation is insufficient or when the system requires a rapid and controlled boost. It is commonly used in off-grid domestic installations and in backup systems.

When is a separate 48V charger required?
In most 48 V systems, the charger is already built into the inverter-charger, which charges from the mains or a generator as well as converting power. A stand-alone charger is useful in three situations: when the inverter does not have a built-in charger, when you want a second charging source for redundancy, and when you need to charge a battery bank that is separate from the main inverter.

What ampere rating to choose
Between 10 and 20 % of the battery’s capacity. For 100 Ah at 48 V — around 5 kWh — a charger rated at 10 to 20 A. Bear in mind that at 48 volts, each ampere delivers four times as much energy as at 12 V: a 25 A charger at 48 V delivers 1.2 kW.

Charger for 48V lithium batteries
If the bank is 48V lithium battery, the charger must be a LiFePO4-compatible model with the correct absorption and float voltages, and must not force an equalisation phase as it would with lead-acid batteries. Ideally, it should also follow the instructions from the battery’s BMS.
In a Victron system with DVCC control, the unit itself adjusts currents and voltages based on the data reported by the battery, so there is no need to configure anything manually once communication has been established.
