Upower manufactures 12-volt LiFePO4 lithium batteries for campervans, boats and mobile applications, featuring an integrated BMS and offering excellent value for money. It is the entry-level option for lithium batteries when your budget doesn’t stretch to the top-of-the-range models.
The Upower range
Modules for 12,8 V Available in capacities of 10, 50, 150, 200 and 300 Ah, all with an integrated BMS. They are installed in the same way as a conventional battery: you do not need any additional electronics or special configuration.
The 300 Ah version is the one to look out for if you live in a van: 3.8 kWh in a single unit, without having to connect several modules in parallel – and with all the wiring that entails.
What to expect from an entry-level lithium battery
Faced with a AGM with the same nominal capacity: half the weight, twice the actually usable energy and between five and ten times as many cycles. The difference compared with a Victron It’s all about communication with the rest of the system and the level of support, not chemistry.
If your setup is straightforward — panel, controller, battery and inverter — and you don’t need the battery to report its status to the inverter, an Upower is perfectly adequate. If you’re installing a complete Victron system with Cerbo and want DVCC control, the Smart range is the better choice.
How to charge it
With a LiFePO4 profile across all three sources: MPPT controller from panels, DC-DC booster from the alternator — never directly — and 220V charger at a standstill.
Remember that a lithium battery must not be charged at temperatures below 0 ºC: if you’re going to use the van in winter, check that the model has a low-temperature cut-off.
