A solar kit contains all the components of a system — panels, charge controller, battery, inverter and protective devices — which are already matched to one another and ready to be installed. It avoids the most common problem faced by those who buy components separately: ending up with a charge controller that is under-rated, an oversized inverter or cables that are not thick enough.
What sort of solar kit do you need?
Solar kit for campervans: Designed for vans and motorhomes. Panel, MPPT controller, lithium battery, booster for charging from the alternator, and inverter. This is our most comprehensive range and the area where we provide the most advice.
Solar kit for off-grid homes: for off-grid homes. Here, the battery bank and the inverter-charger take centre stage, often supplemented by a generator.
Self-consumption solar kit: for homes connected to the grid that want to reduce their bills, with or without batteries.
Solar kit for sailing boats: made from materials suitable for a saline environment and designed for installations where the motor is used infrequently.
How to size a kit
Always based on consumption, never on available space. Add up the watt-hours you use each day, and from there you’ll get three figures: the panel power required to generate that amount during the daylight hours of your worst month, the battery capacity needed to cover the number of days without sunlight you want to last, and the inverter power required for maximum simultaneous consumption.
The most common mistake is to base calculations on July figures. In December, a solar panel generates around a third of what it does in summer: if the system is intended for year-round use, calculations must be based on winter conditions or an alternative source of power must be provided.
