Details of the AGM Battery 12V 60Ah Victron AGM Super Cycle M6 - BAT412060082

Characteristics AGM Battery 12V 60Ah Victron AGM Super Cycle M6 - BAT412060082

The AGM 12V 60Ah Victron AGM Super Cycle M6 - BAT412060082 is the result of recent developments in electrochemistry in the field of agm batteries. The paste on the positive plates is less sensitive to softening, even in the event of repeated full discharges of the battery, and new additives in the electrolyte reduce sulphation in the event of deep discharge.

Tests show that this agm 60Ah Super Cycle battery can withstand up to three hundred DoD cycles of the 100%. These tests consist of a daily discharge at 10.8V with I = 0.2C₂₀, followed by approximately two hours of standby in the discharged condition, and then a recharge with I = 0.2C₂₀. This lead acid battery is recommended for use in applications where DoD of 100%, or frequent DoD of 60-80% is expected.

An additional advantage of the new electrochemistry is that it allows for a smaller size and lower weight compared to standard deep cycle AGM batteries. The internal resistance is also slightly lower compared to other standard deep cycle agm batteries.

What is an AGM battery

An AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery is a type of lead acid battery in which the electrolyte is absorbed in a glass fibre mesh. AGM batteries are safer and more efficient.

An agm battery consists of:

  • Lead plates: these are the electrodes of the agm battery, they are made of an alloy of lead and other metals such as calcium or tin to improve resistance and durability.
  • Absorbed electrolyte: A mixture of sulphuric acid and water that is impregnated in a glass fibre mesh instead of being in a liquid state.
  • Fibreglass separators: These act like sponges to keep the electrolyte in contact with the plates, thus improving efficiency and preventing spillage.
  • Plastic housing: Manufactured from impact and corrosion resistant materials, such as polypropylene, to protect the internal components.
  • Pressure regulating valve: Allows gas release in case of overpressure, preventing damage and ensuring safe operation.

An agm is a VRLA (Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid) type battery; it is sealed, maintenance-free and vibration-resistant. agm batteries are ideal for applications in automobiles, motorbikes, solar power systems (solar panel batteries) and back-up equipment. There are many models of agm batteries, such as the agm 100ah battery, solar panel battery, agm 80ah battery or this one, agm 60ah battery.

Charging an agm battery

It is necessary to have an agm battery charger, it must be a specific charger for this type of battery as the voltage and current need to be precisely controlled, to avoid overcharging which could damage the agm battery.

3-stage agm battery charging process

The charging of an agm battery is done in three phases:

  • Bulk:
    • A constant current is applied, between 10% and 20% of the nominal capacity of the agm battery (C20).
    • Voltage increase: The voltage of the agm is progressively increased to between 14.4 and 14.8V.
  • Absorption:
    • Once the maximum voltage is reached, it remains constant while the current gradually decreases.
    • This phase continues until the charging current is reduced to 1% of the nominal capacity of the agm batteries.
  • Flotation:
    • The voltage is reduced to a maintenance level, typically between 13.65 and 13.8 V, to compensate for self-discharge without overloading the agm battery.

Recommendations

  • Avoid overloading: Overloading can lead to outgassing and internal damage to the agm.
  • Ventilated environment: Charge in a well-ventilated area to dissipate any residual gas from the agm battery and to avoid harmful accumulations.
  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions: It is always essential to consult the specific recommendations of the agm and agm battery charger manufacturer to ensure safe and efficient charging.
