Can the alternator cope with the load of a 48 V battery bank?

That’s the calculation you need to make before buying. The power remains the same, so charging at 48 V with 10 A means drawing around 45 A from the 12 V side, plus conversion losses.

A standard alternator is not designed to supply that current continuously: it overheats and its service life is reduced. If the battery bank is large, the solution usually involves using a reinforced alternator or limiting the charging current. See the range of DC-DC converters.
