The Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/48 8A Isolated Victron Converter - ORI124838120 serves as a DC-DC battery charger or as a power supply. The victron orion Smart can only be configured to provide power when the engine is running. In charger mode, the three-stage charging algorithm will extend the life of the battery.

3-stage adaptive loading algorithm: initial loading - absorption - floating

  • In the case of lead-acid batteries, the absorption time should be short if the discharges to be made are light. After a deep discharge, the absorption charging time is automatically increased to ensure a complete recharge of the battery.
  • For lithium batteries, the absorption time is fixed: 2 hours.

  • The integrated engine shutdown detection will stop the inverter when the engine is not running. This prevents the starter battery from discharging (see manual for details).

Remote On/Off

Installation of victron Smart 12/48 8A Isolated booster

Assembly

  • It must be installed vertically on a non-flammable surface, with the power supply terminals facing downwards.
  • A minimum safety distance of 10 cm must be left around the product for optimal cooling.
  • Place it close to the battery, but not directly on top of it, to avoid damage caused by gassing the battery.

Wiring and fuses

  • Use flexible multi-stranded copper cables for battery connections.
  • Each strand must have a diameter of less than 0.4 mm (0.016 inches) or a cross-section of less than 0.125 mm² (AWG26).
  • The maximum working temperature is 90 °C (194 °F).
  • For example, a 16 mm² cable must have at least 122 strands (strand class 5 or higher according to VDE 0295, IEC 60228 and BS6360).
  • If thicker filaments are used, the contact area will be too small and the resulting high contact resistance will lead to severe overheating which could cause a fire.

Recommended cable type

To properly connect a cable to the input and output screw terminals, flexible and very flexible core wire cables can be used:

  • IEC 60228 - Class 2 (stranded conductor), Class 5 (flexible), Class 6 (very flexible)
  • UL486A-B - Class B/C (stranded conductor), Class I (flexible), Class K (very flexible)
  • Stranded core cables are very stiff, so they are hardly used in practice.
  • A torque of 1.6Nm is recommended.

Check polarity

  • The Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/48 8A isolated Victron Converter is not protected against reverse polarity of the battery. Possible damage caused by reverse polarity is not covered by warranty. In addition, devices damaged by reverse polarity cannot be repaired.
  • Always check the polarity of the battery before connecting or reconnecting the cables to the victron orion tr.
  • Do not attempt to connect the battery cables to the victron booster, only if the input and output terminals are safely accessible.
  • Be careful not to bend any strands when inserting the wires into the input and output terminals.
  • Connect the battery cables to the victron booster first, check the polarity of the battery once more and connect the battery.

DC-DC power supply mode configuration

  • Disconnect the remote on/off, remove the jumper or unplug the terminal block.
  • Connect the input power cables.
  • Open the VictronConnect application to configure the product.
  • Connect the load. The victron booster is now ready to be used as a power supply.
  • Reconnect the remote on/off to activate the product.
