Details of the Orion Victron non-isolated high power converter 24/12-60 - ORI241260020

Orion Victron non-isolated high power converter 24/12-60 - ORI241260020

The Orion 24/12-60 is a compact and robust device with a high output power, designed to transform direct current (DC) from a 24 V system to a 12 V system in a stable and efficient way, with an output current of up to 60 A.

This type of Orion is used in electrical systems where there are two battery banks with different voltages or where there is a need to power equipment or charge 12V auxiliary batteries from a 24V source.

It is especially useful when the main system is of higher voltage (24 V) and a lower voltage is required, but with sufficient DC current available to power demanding equipment such as refrigerators, lighting systems, critical electronics, heavy duty pumps or 12 V auxiliary inverters.

For example, in many vehicles, boats or solar installations, the main battery bank may be configured at 24V (to power inverters, electric motors or large loads), while many electrical accessories (lights, navigation systems, refrigerators or navigation equipment) operate at 12V.

The Orion takes 24 V power and converts it to 12 V reliably and continuously, without the need for an additional power source.

As a non-isolated converter, it does not incorporate galvanic isolation between input and output.
This means that the negative input pole and the negative output pole are connected to each other, there is no separation.
This design is simpler, more efficient and more economical when no mass separation is required in the installation.

Characteristics of the non-insulated Orion 24/12-60

Power and efficiency

This Orion has a 24 volt input, designed to connect directly to batteries or 24V systems, and a 12 volt output with up to 60 amps DC, allowing high power to be delivered to 12V loads.

In addition, the Orion 24/12-60 is highly efficient (from the 95%), so most of the power input at 24V is converted to useful power at 12V, minimising losses and equipment heating even in high-demand applications.

Configuration and control

The Orion 24/12-60 has a remote on/off connector, which allows the converter to be switched on or off from a control panel, relay, low current switch or from the system itself, without the need to install a high power switch in the main wiring.
This detail simplifies both use and installation.

Although this model does not include advanced features such as Bluetooth connectivity or app-based monitoring, it still offers stable and reliable operation with reduced quiescent current.

Compatibility and reliability

The Orion converter is compatible with both lead-acid (AGM/GEL) and lithium batteries (LiFePO₄), offering great versatility for different types of installations.

In addition, it has a very high reliability due to the renowned Victron Blue construction with high quality components designed to provide continuous service even under demanding conditions, both in mobile and industrial environments.

Protections

The Orion 24/12-60 incorporates full overload, overvoltage, undervoltage and short-circuit protection, as well as thermal protection. If the temperature exceeds certain limits or if a short circuit is detected, this Orion automatically reduces power or shuts down to protect both the equipment and the rest of the system from damage.

In addition, it has IP43 protection, which protects the device from water and dust, making it suitable for mobile or technical environments.

Advantages of the Orion Victron non-isolated high power converter 24/12-60 - ORI241260020

Orion non-isolated converters have many useful advantages, among them:

  • It allows the equipment is switched off and on remotely
  • It works as stable DC power supply for 12 V loads
  • It has integrated protections that prevent damage to both the Orion converter and the batteries connected to it.

Typical use of the Orion 24/12-60

The Orion 24/12-60 converter is commonly used in installations such as:

  • Trucks, motorhomes and camper vans, where the battery is 24 V but several 12 V devices are needed.
  • Boats and yachts, where there is a 24 V system and a 12 V network.
  • Hybrid or multi-battery solar installations, to supply 12 V loads from panels connected to one or more 24 V batteries.
  • Commercial vehicles and machinery, where the auxiliary systems operate at 12 V while the rest of the electrical system operates at 24 V.
