pylontech US5000 battery features

The modular format of the US5000 provides superior scalability compared to other lithium batteries on the market. Pylontech batteries of different models can be connected, a feature not offered by all battery brands.

The 4.8kWh Pylontech US5000 48V lithium battery can be connected in parallel up to a maximum of 80 units. A maximum of 16 US5000 battery modules can be connected in parallel, if you want to connect more, a Pylontech Hub port is required. With the Hub up to 80 modules of the 4.8kWh Pylontech US5000 48V lithium battery can be connected; up to 5 groups of 16 battery modules each can be connected.

This Pylontech lithium battery incorporates multiple communication protocols that allow it to share charging parameters and function properly.

Pylontech lithium batteries are maintenance-free. They are sealed modules and are intended for indoor installation. They should not be installed in places where the temperature and humidity are very extreme.

The Pylontech Us5000 battery has a built-in internal BMS, which distributes the power between the cells and prevents them from overcharging or over-discharging.

Pylontech US5000 Battery Installation and Assembly

For safety reasons, it is mandatory that whenever two or more US5000 modules are installed in a rack or on brackets, to ensure the stability of the batteries and their proper ventilation.

Before installation, the mains must be disconnected and the battery must be checked to ensure that it is in the off mode. The polarity must be taken into account and the positive and negative cables must not be confused.

Pylontech batteries can only be connected in parallel, they do not allow series connection because the integrated BMS is for the battery voltage, in the case of the Pylontech US5000 battery it is 48V.

The US5000 lithium battery must be grounded and the resistance must be less than 0.1Ω.

The following picture shows the front connections of the US5000 Pylontech:

Power terminals

The battery has two pairs of terminals with the same function, one for connecting the battery or the lithium battery bank to the installation and the other for connecting the Pylontech modules to each other.

The battery is fitted with two 21 cm power cables, a 21 cm RJ45 communication cable and a 1 m long 6AWG earth cable. The power cables have self-locking connectors, it is necessary to hold down this locking button while removing the power plug. The picture below shows the cables that are included with the US5000 Pylontech battery.

Things to consider before installation of US5000

  • The floor on which the rack is to be placed must be flat and level.
  • The ambient temperature should be 0°C - 50°C.
  • Temperature and humidity must be kept constant.
  • The installation site should be as dust and dirt free as possible.
  • Pylontech lithium batteries must be more than 50 cm away from the air outlet of the inverter.
  • It must not be in direct sunlight.
  • There are no ventilation requirements but it is recommended not to install in a confined area.
  • If the US5000 battery detects that the temperature is not in the proper range it will shut down to prevent damage.

4.8kWh Pylontech US5000 battery mount

Can be mounted vertically or horizontally. Cannot be installed sideways or with the front connections upside down. Modules cannot be stacked on top of each other, they must be placed with brackets (maximum 3 modules) or in a rack. The following pictures show the installation of the US5000 with brackets.

Pylontech US5000 in parallel

Parallel connection with other Pylontech models

The Pylontech US5000 battery allows parallel connection with other Pylontech lithium batteries. This priority must be taken into account:

US5000 > UP5000/US3000C/US2000C > U3000/US200.

If it is decided to use the battery deployment option:

  • The US5000 would be the main pylontech battery.
  • 2nd - 8th slave lithium batteries: US5000/UP5000/US3000C/US2000C/US3000/US2000
  • Slave lithium batteries 9th - 16th: US5000/UP5000/US3000C/US2000C

Switching on the batteries

Check all cables connecting the battery modules and the cables to the inverter. The disconnecting device between the battery and the inverter must be switched on.

  • Switch on all battery modules.
  • The one with the empty link port 0 is the main lithium battery, the other modules are slaves.
  • By pressing the red SW button on the main battery, the lights of the other modules will turn on one by one.

Switching off the batteries

  • Turn off the external power supply.
  • Press the red SW switch on the main battery. The slave batteries will be switched off.
  • Turn off the power switch.
  • Switches off the disconnection device between the battery system and the inverter.

Compatibility of the US5000 with Victron

The perfect companion for the Pylontech US5000 battery is the Inverter Charger 48V Victron MultiPlus II 48/5000 VA 48V 70+50A - PMP482505010. To connect it to the battery, you need the Victron VE.Can to CAN-bus cable for BMS type A 5m - ASS030710050.

The combination of Victron + Pylontech can be used for the following systems:

  • Off-grid (DVCC)
  • Network backup (DVCC or ESS)
  • Energy Storage Systems (ESS) - Self-consumption

It is mandatory to install a GX device: The BMS included in the US5000 battery communicates with the Victron GX device. The minimum recommended firmware version for the GX device is v2.42.

All the Multi, Multiplus, MultiGrid and Quattro are supported. All VE.Bus inverters and inverter/chargers are compatible, provided that you use the appropriate model for the nominal voltage of the battery. They must be connected to the GX device via the VE.Bus connection port.

All the MPPT VE. Direct BlueSolar and SmartSolar are compatible. They must be connected to the GX device. If you want to use a VE.Can MPPT (2019 and later) the GX device must have more than one VE.Can port, as this is the port used for the connection to the battery.

Connections

  • To connect the US5000 battery to the inverter you need the Victron VE.Can to CAN-bus cable for type A BMS.
  • Several battery modules can be connected to form a single large battery by connecting the RJ45 cable supplied by Pylontech via the battery link ports.
    • The batteries are automatically detected and linked together, no DIP switches on the battery module need to be set.
      • The DIP switches must be set to 000 for the GX device to detect lithium batteries.
    • The battery with the empty link port 0 is the master or main battery.
  • Connect the communication cable with the side labelled BMS Battery to the Pylontech CAN port of the main battery.
  • Some GX devices have multiple CAN ports. If the GX device has only one VE.Can port, the VE.Can port profile must be changed to CAN-bus BMS (500 kbit/s) for the battery.
    • Connect the Victron VE.Can labelled side to the GX device.
    • Connect a VE.Can terminator to the other VE.Can connector of the GX device.
    • If not connected correctly, the battery will not appear on the GX device and will automatically shut down.

GX device configuration

If the GX device version is v2.80 or later, the DVCC settings will be set and applied automatically. In case it has to be done manually, these are the values to be configured.

  • West Virginia Convention and Convention Center: EN.
