LiFePO4 Battery Victron 12.8V-160Ah Smart

The Victron 12.8V-160Ah Smart LiFePO4 LiFePO4 battery, like all LiFePO4 family batteries, is one of the safest Li-Ion batteries on the market. The nominal voltage of a LFP cell is 3.2V (lead-acid: 2V/cell). A 12.8V LFP battery, therefore, consists of 4 cells connected in series; and a 25.6V battery consists of 8 cells connected in series.

Robust batteries

Conventional lead-acid batteries often fail prematurely due to sulfation when:

- operate in deficit mode for long periods of time (if the battery is not fully charged on a regular basis)
- are left partially loaded or, worse, completely unloaded (e.g., on yachts or caravans during the winter).

In contrast, the Victron 12.8V-160Ah Smartt LiFePO4 battery does not need to be fully charged. Its lifetime is even improved when the battery is partially charged instead of fully charged. This is the decisive advantage that sets LFP batteries above traditional lead-acid batteries. Other advantages include a wide operating temperature range, excellent cyclic performance, low internal resistance and high efficiency.

The chemical composition of LFPs is the right choice for very demanding applications, such as energy storage in ships and vehicles.

Efficient

In several applications, energy efficiency can be of crucial importance, especially in off-grid applications such as boats or vehicles, or in off-grid solar installations.
The full cycle energy efficiency (discharge from 100% to 0% and back to 100%) of a normal lead-acid battery is 80%.
In contrast, the full cycle energy efficiency of a Victron 12.8V-160Ah Smart LiFePO4 battery is 92%.
The charging process of lead-acid batteries becomes particularly inefficient when the 80% state of charge is reached, resulting in efficiencies of 50% or even lower in solar systems where several days of reserves are needed (batteries operating between 70% and 100% of charge).
In contrast, an LFP battery will still achieve 90% efficiency under mild discharge conditions.

Victron 12.8V-160Ah Smart LiFePO4 LiFePO4 battery size and weight

Compared to a lead-acid battery of the same characteristics, you can save up to 70% in weight and footprint, making them ideal for applications in boats and caravans with limited space for energy storage systems.

Are LiFePO4 batteries cost-effective?

Although LFP batteries may seem more expensive compared to lead-acid batteries, if used in demanding applications, the high initial cost will be more than compensated by a longer service life, superior reliability and excellent efficiency. In other words, they are particularly cost-effective in the medium and long term because they guarantee a longer life cycle than conventional batteries.

Bluetooth connectivity

Thanks to its Bluetooth connection, it is easier than ever to know the status of the battery and to monitor parameters such as cell voltage, cell temperature or alarm status. It is a particularly useful application for detecting potential problems, such as cell imbalance.

Equipped with Bluetooth, the battery can communicate with the application. VictronConnect. The VictronConnect application is used to read battery information, make or modify battery settings, receive alarms and update firmware.

LiFePO4 batteries such as the Victron 12.8V-160Ah Smart LiFePO4 battery have integrated cell balancing and control. Up to 5 batteries can be installed in parallel and up to four 12V or two 24V batteries in series, so that a 48V battery bank of up to 1500Ah can be configured. Cell balancing/control cables can be daisy-chained and must be connected to a Battery Management System (BMS).

Battery Management System (BMS)

LFP batteries have integrated balancing and cell control. Cell balancing/control cables can be daisy-chained and must be connected to a battery management system (BMS).

The BMS is connected to the BTV and its essential functions are:
It can generate a pre-alarm whenever the voltage of a battery cell falls below 3.1 V (adjustable between 2.85 V and 3.15 V).
2. Disconnect or switch off the load when the voltage of a battery cell drops below 2.8 V (adjustable between 2.6 V and 2.8 V).
3. Stop the charging process when the voltage of a battery cell rises above 4.2V.
4. Shut down the system whenever the temperature of a cell exceeds 50°C.
