The power rating is chosen based on your consumption and the time of year when you need it most.<\/li>\n<li><strong>MPPT charge controller or hybrid inverter<\/strong>: monitors the battery charge and makes the most of the panels\u2019 output.<\/li>\n<li><strong>LiFePO4 lithium batteries<\/strong>: they store energy for the night or for cloudy days. Here are the three steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Work out your daily intake<\/strong> in watt-hours (Wh): add up the power rating of each appliance multiplied by the number of hours you use it each day.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Choose the battery<\/strong> depending on the number of days without sunshine you wish to cover. For example, a house that consumes 5 kWh a day and requires two days\u2019 autonomy needs around 10 kWh of usable battery capacity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Choose the power rating of the solar panels and the inverter<\/strong>: the panels must be able to generate enough electricity to cover your daily consumption during daylight hours in your coldest month, and the inverter must be able to handle the maximum power you are likely to use at any one time (oven, pump, washing machine, etc.).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The most common mistake is to base calculations on summer data.
