A voltage stabiliser (also known as voltage regulator, voltage stabiliser or current stabiliser) is a device that is installed between the mains supply and your appliances and keeps the output voltage constant even if the mains voltage rises or falls. At FVComponentes we have 230 V single-phase voltage stabilisers from 3.5 kVA to 30 kVA and 400 V three-phase stabilisers From 10.5 kVA to 150 kVA, all with servomotor regulation, output accuracy of ±2 %, manual bypass and delivery throughout Spain and Portugal.

They are the solution when the voltage in your home, business premises or industrial unit is unstable: houses at the end of the line in rural areas, housing estates with overloaded transformers, industrial estates with a lot of machinery, or facilities where equipment switches off, flickers or breaks down due to low or high voltages.

How a servo-driven voltage stabiliser works

The stabiliser continuously measures the input voltage and compares it with an internal reference. When it detects a deviation, a small motor (the servo motor) moves the tap of a variable autotransformer (variac) which, via a step-up transformer, adds or subtracts the required voltage. The result is an output of 230 V ±2 % (or 400 V ±2 % in three-phase) with an input that can vary between 160 and 270 V by phase.

Continuous regulation: there are no voltage spikes, as with relay-based models, which is why it is suitable for sensitive loads.

Pure sine wave: The stabiliser does not generate the voltage; it corrects it, thereby maintaining the mains waveform.

Protections: overcurrent trip, high and low voltage, and withstands overloads of 200 % for 10 seconds to accommodate motor starts.

Manual bypass: allows the system to continue to be powered directly from the mains during maintenance.

Performance exceeding 96 % and a display showing input voltage, output voltage and current.

230 V single-phase voltage stabilisers

For homes, commercial premises and workshops with a single-phase supply. If it is the whole property, part of the contracted power.

Convert to kVA: divide the watts by 0.8 (the power factor for this type of equipment). For example, 4,000 W ÷ 0.8 = 5 kVA.

Add a margin of 20 to 30 %, and even more so if there are motors, compressors, pumps or air-conditioning units, which draw several times their rated power when starting up.

Check the intensity: the rating of the stabiliser must be equal to or greater than that of the main switch (IGA) for the part of the installation it is intended to protect.

As a guide, a property with a contracted power of 5.75 kW falls within the M1-7.5 (7.5 kVA, 26 A) and one with 9.2 kW with the M1-15 (15 kVA, 52 A). If you have a three-phase supply, always choose a three-phase model: you must not use three single-phase units as a substitute.

Voltage in Spain: when you need a voltage stabiliser

In Spain, the rated voltage is 230 V in single-phase and 400 V in three-phase supply (the old 220/380 V), and the regulations allow the distribution company a variation of ±7 %, that is, between approximately 214 and 246 V. Outside this range, electrical equipment is affected and the distribution company is obliged to rectify the situation. The most common signs of unstable voltage are:

Lights that flicker or dim when an electrical appliance is switched on.

Heat pumps, air conditioning systems or geothermal heating systems that display a low-voltage error.

Boilers, fridges or water pumps that frequently stop working or break down.

Electronic or computer equipment that restarts for no apparent reason.

Voltage measured at the socket below 207 V or above 253 V.

Before buying, measure the voltage at various times of day (or using a mains analyser) and, if it is outside the specified limits, make a complaint to your electricity supplier as well. A voltage stabiliser is the immediate solution in the meantime, or the permanent solution if the problem is structural in nature.

Voltage stabiliser and photovoltaic systems

A common question is whether a stabiliser prevents the the solar inverter switches off due to overvoltage. Usually no: the inverter switches off because, when feeding surplus energy into the grid, the voltage at the connection point rises above the limit set by its grid protection mechanisms (around 253 V). A servo motor stabiliser is designed to supply loads, not to allow energy to flow back into the grid through it, so it must not be installed between the inverter and the grid. In such cases, the cable cross-section must be checked and a complaint lodged with the electricity supplier.

Where it does fit in is protecting consumption in a house or industrial unit with a low mains voltage, or connected to a generator with an unstable voltage. If your problem is that the mains supply is two-phase, without a neutral and the inverter won’t start; what you need isn’t a stabiliser but a neutral-generating transformer.

Installation

It is placed after the meter and the main switch, protecting the part of the installation it is to supply (the whole property or just a few circuits) with its own circuit breaker and residual current device.

The units are IP21-rated: they must be installed indoors, in a dry, well-ventilated location with sufficient space around them to allow heat to dissipate.

Large models (20 kVA and above for single-phase units and across the entire three-phase range) are supplied on pallets and weigh between 100 and 520 kg: please ensure access and unloading facilities are available.

The connection must be carried out by a qualified electrician in accordance with the REBT. If you are in the Region of Murcia or the surrounding area, our team of ICIDE can carry out the installation.

Frequently asked questions about voltage stabilisers

What is a voltage stabiliser and what is it used for?

It is a device that automatically corrects fluctuations in mains voltage and supplies your appliances with a constant voltage (230 V or 400 V ±2 %). It helps to prevent breakdowns, power cuts and malfunctions in equipment when the mains voltage is unstable.

Are a voltage stabiliser and a voltage regulator the same thing?

Yes, in practice they are synonymous. "Voltage regulator" or "automatic voltage regulator" (AVR) is used more commonly for small relay-based units, whilst "voltage stabiliser" is used for higher-power units with a servomotor, but both perform the same function.

Which is better, a voltage stabiliser or a surge protector?

They do different things. A surge protector (for both permanent and transient surges) cuts off or diverts the surge to protect the installation, but it does not correct anything: if the voltage is low, your equipment will still be receiving low voltage. A voltage stabiliser corrects the voltage continuously. Ideally, you should have both: the surge protector in the fuse box and a voltage stabiliser where the voltage is regularly unstable.

Where should a voltage stabiliser be installed?

Between the main distribution board and the circuits you wish to protect: either after the main switch to provide protection for the entire property or industrial unit, or on a specific circuit if you only wish to protect certain pieces of equipment. Always install indoors, in a dry and well-ventilated place.

How do I know which voltage stabiliser I need?

Choose single-phase or three-phase depending on your supply, add up the power of the loads, divide this by 0.8 to obtain the kVA, and add a margin of 20–30 %. Also check that the stabiliser’s current rating covers the main circuit breaker for the circuit it is to protect.

What are the disadvantages of a voltage stabiliser?

It has a low power consumption (efficiency greater than 96 %), emits some heat and a slight noise when the servomotor corrects its position, and servomotor models require periodic brush checks in high-activity installations. Furthermore, it does not provide protection against power cuts: for that, a UPS or a battery-backed system is required.

What is the service life of a voltage stabiliser?

A properly sized servomotor stabiliser installed in a well-ventilated location can last for more than 10 to 15 years. The parts subject to wear are the Variac brushes, which can be replaced.

Will a 220 V voltage stabiliser work in Spain?

Yes. "220 V" is the old term for domestic voltage; today, the standard rating is 230 V. Our single-phase voltage stabilisers accept an input voltage of between 160 and 270 V and output 230 V ±2 %.

Do I need a single-phase or three-phase stabiliser?

It depends on your supply. If the distribution board receives a live and neutral wire, it is single-phase (230 V). If it receives three live wires (and usually a neutral), it is three-phase (400 V). A three-phase installation must be stabilised using three-phase equipment.

Can a stabiliser be used with a generator?

Yes. When fitted at the output of a generator set, it corrects voltage fluctuations from the generator. The generator must have sufficient power to supply the loads plus the stabiliser’s own power consumption.

A voltage stabiliser or a UPS?

A UPS maintains the power supply during a power cut thanks to its batteries, but its power output and runtime are limited. A voltage stabiliser does not provide backup power, but it continuously regulates the voltage for much higher power ratings. For critical equipment, both are used in combination: a voltage stabiliser for the entire installation and a UPS for equipment that cannot be switched off.

Do you need a fitter to connect a stabiliser?

Yes. It is connected to the fuse box and requires its own safety devices, so it must be fitted by a qualified electrician.

Related searches

220 V / 230 V voltage stabiliser for the home: The single-phase models ranging from 3.5 to 15 kVA are suitable for any home.

220 V 5,000 W or 10,000 W voltage stabiliser: 5,000 W corresponds to the M1-7.5 (6 kW) and 10,000 W to the M1-15 (12 kW).

Voltage stabiliser for an electrical switchboard: They are all fitted in the distribution board, next to the main switch.

20 kVA three-phase voltage stabiliser: choose the M3-22.5 (22.5 kVA, 18 kW).

Single-phase voltage regulator: the 230 V M1 range.

Voltage stabiliser transformer: our stabilisers combine a variac and a step-up transformer; if you need isolation or to generate a neutral, please refer to the isolation transformers.

Not sure which model to choose?
