With a <strong>Shelly Wi-Fi relay<\/strong> For less than \u20ac30, the GX itself can switch on the water heater, the pool pump or a heating element just when there\u2019s excess sunlight, and switch them off when there\u2019s no longer any excess. In this guide, we explain <strong>Which Shelly models are compatible with Victron?<\/strong>, which range to choose for each load, when a contactor is needed, and what mistakes to avoid.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1720\" height=\"1060\" class=\"wp-image-42992\" src=\"https:\/\/fvcomponentes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/shelly-victron-arquitectura.png\" alt=\"Diagram showing the integration of Shelly relays with a Victron Cerbo GX and GX Opportunity Loads\" title=\"\"><figcaption>The GX detects the Shelly devices on the local network and uses them to measure and switch loads.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Why Shelly and Victron get on so well<\/h2>\n<p>From Venus OS 3.60 onwards, the GX includes an official driver (<em>dbus-shelly<\/em>) which automatically detects any second-generation or later Shelly devices on the same network. Each Shelly can act as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Wi-Fi electricity meter<\/strong> (AC consumption, third-party PV inverter, generator or heat pump) visible in VRM.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wi-Fi switch<\/strong> controllable via the GX, VRM and Node-RED.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Surplus actuator<\/strong> for <strong>GX Opportunity Loads<\/strong>, the feature (Venus OS 3.80, in beta as of September 2026) that automatically distributes surplus solar power amongst flexible loads.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For Opportunity Loads, there is one rule that changes everything: <strong>Shelly himself has to switch the load and measure its power<\/strong>. A Shelly Pro 3EM, which is simply a separate relay that switches a circuit, won\u2019t work; a Shelly 1PM, which does both, will.<\/p>\n<h2>Shelly ranges: which one to choose for each load<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fvcomponentes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/shelly-gamas-victron.png\" alt=\"Shelly product ranges compatible with Victron: plug, mini, standard and Pro\" title=\"\"><figcaption>All Gen2, Gen3, Gen4 and Pro ranges run on Venus OS. Officially tested by Victron.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shelly Plug S MTR Gen3<\/strong> (ref. S3PL-00112EU) \u2014 12 A, the successor to the previous model, with more accurate measurements and Bluetooth.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shelly Outdoor Plug S Gen3<\/strong> (ref. S3PL-10112EU) \u2014 16 A, IP54, for outdoor use (small swimming pool pump, watering).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>2. Mini (for recessing into switch boxes)<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"505\" class=\"wp-image-43013\" src=\"https:\/\/fvcomponentes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/shelly-mini-estandar.png\" alt=\"Shelly flush-mounted relays in the following sizes: 1PM Mini Gen3, 1PM Gen3 and 2PM Gen3\" title=\"\"><figcaption>From left to right: 1PM Mini Gen3 (8 A), 1PM Gen3 (16 A) and 2PM Gen3 (2 channels).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The smallest on the market; they fit behind a switch. Be careful with the mains supply: <strong>8 A maximum<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Shelly 1PM Mini Gen3<\/strong> (ref. S3SW-001P8EU) \u2014 8 A \/ ~1.8 kW, with measurement. A favourite amongst the Victron community for its price (around \u20ac15).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shelly 1PM Mini Gen4<\/strong> (ref. S4SW-001P8EU) \u2014 same as above, but with Zigbee and Matter added. Tested by Victron.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shelly PM Mini Gen3<\/strong> (ref. S3PM-001PCEU16) \u2014 measurement only, 16 A, without relay. It is used as a meter, not as an actuator.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shelly 1 Mini Gen3\/Gen4<\/strong> \u2014 dry contact without a rating: can be used as a switch, <em>no<\/em> for Opportunity Loads.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>3. Flush-mounted standard (16 A)<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Shelly 1PM Gen3<\/strong> (ref. S3SW-001P16EU) and <strong>Shelly 1PM Gen4<\/strong> (ref. S4SW-001P16EU) \u2014 16 A \/ 3.5 kW with gauge. The right choice for a 1.5\u20132 kW water heater or a 2\u20133 kW heating element.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shelly 2PM Gen3 \/ Gen4<\/strong> (ref. S3SW-002P16EU \/ S4SW-002P16EU) \u2014 two metered channels (10 A per channel, 16 A in total): two loads with a single device.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shelly Plus 1PM<\/strong> (ref. SNSW-001P16EU) and <strong>Plus 2PM<\/strong> \u2014 the previous generation (Gen2), which is fully compatible if you already have it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>4. SPSW-001PE16EU) \u2014 1-channel 16 A with measurement. Officially tested by Victron.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shelly Pro 2PM<\/strong> (ref. SPSW-002PE16EU) \u2014 2 channels, 16 A, with measurement (confirmed in the Opportunity Loads beta).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shelly Pro 4pm<\/strong> (ref. SPSW-004PE16EU) \u2014 4 channels, 16 A (40 A in total) with metering and display. Tested by Victron. Ideal for managing four loads from the switchboard.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shelly Pro EM\u201150<\/strong> (ref. SPEM-002CEBEU50) \u2014 2 x 50 A clamps + 1 x 2 A relay for the contactor coil. Tested by Victron. This is the key component for high-power loads (see below).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shelly Pro 3EM<\/strong> (ref. SPEM-003CEBEU) \u2014 three-phase meter with three 120 A clamps. Tested by Victron as a grid, PV inverter or consumption meter (also as three single-phase meters). S3EM-003CXCEU63) \u2014 three-phase, direct measurement up to 63 A per phase.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Other devices compatible with Venus OS (though not for surplus stock)<\/h3>\n<p>Shelly Pro 1 (dry contact), Powerstrip Gen4 (4-socket power strip), Dimmer Gen3, Plus RGBW PM and Duo Gen3 bulbs appear as switches or dimmers in the GX. Useful for automating lighting via VRM, not for managing power surpluses.<\/p>\n<h2>Compatibility table: Shelly and Victron models<\/h2>\n<p>\u2705 = officially tested by Victron with the driver <em>dbus-shelly<\/em>. <strong>OL<\/strong> = Compatible as a GX Opportunity Loads actuator (switches and measures using the same device). Specifications are subject to review and may vary by region: check the code on the packaging.<\/small><\/p>\n<h2>What DOESN\u2019T work<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The entire first generation (Gen1)<\/strong>: Shelly 1, 1PM, 2.5, EM, 3EM, original Plug S. They use a different API and the current driver does not recognise them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Non-metric models as a means of managing surpluses<\/strong>: Shelly 1, Plus 1, Pro 1, Pro 2, Pro 3, 1 Mini. They can be used as manual switches, but Opportunity Loads ignores them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Combining a meter and a relay in separate devices<\/strong> (e.g. Pro 3EM + Pro 1): Victron requires that metering and switching be carried out on the same Shelly unit.<\/li>\n<li><strong>DC loads<\/strong>: At present, Opportunity Loads only handles AC loads.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>High-current loads: when and how to use a contactor<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fvcomponentes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/shelly-contactor-cableado.png\" alt=\"Schematic diagram: Shelly EM with a relay and current clamp controlling a contactor for a load exceeding 16 A\" title=\"\"><figcaption>With a Shelly EM Gen3 or Pro EM\u201150, the relay energises the contactor coil and the clamp measures the actual load.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The built-in relays in the Shelly PM are designed to <strong>resistive loads of up to 16 A<\/strong>. Always use a contactor when the load is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A <strong>engine<\/strong> (swimming pool pump, well pump, compressor): the start-up surge damages the Shelly relay.<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>a power rating of more than 3 kW<\/strong> or any load that exceeds 80 % of the Shelly\u2019s rated current on a continuous basis.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Three-phase<\/strong> (air-source heat pumps, electric boilers, large pumps).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The right combination to keep Opportunity Loads running is a <strong>Shelly with a relay and clamp in the same unit<\/strong> (Shelly EM Gen3 or Shelly Pro EM\u201150): the 2 A relay powers the contactor coil and the clamp measures the load\u2019s actual power consumption. If you use a Shelly 1PM to energise the coil, the GX will only detect the coil\u2019s power consumption (a few watts) and the algorithm will not know how much power is being supplied.<\/p>\n<p>Which contactor to choose:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>DIN-rail modular system<\/strong>, 230 V AC coil, 2-pole for single-phase or 4-pole for three-phase.<\/li>\n<li>Calibre in <strong>Category AC-1<\/strong> (resistive) 25 A for water heaters and heating elements up to 5 kW, 40 A for 6\u20139 kW. For motors, use the <strong>AC-3 category<\/strong> the manufacturer\u2019s, which is more stringent.<\/li>\n<li>Common brands: Schneider iCT, Hager ESC, ABB ESB, Chint NCH8, Legrand CX\u00b3. Choose one <strong>quiet<\/strong> if the painting is in the flat.<\/li>\n<li>Add a <strong>thermal-magnetic<\/strong> designed for the load and, if the load is outdoors or in a damp area, a <strong>differential<\/strong> 30 mA.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Requirements and settings to enable the GX to recognise the Shelly<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>GX-compatible<\/strong>: Cerbo GX, Ekrano GX, MultiPlus\u2011II GX or EasySolar\u2011II GX. Venus OS 3.60 or later to view them as a meter\/switch; 3.80 (beta) for Opportunity Loads.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Same local network<\/strong> Unlike the GX: discovery is via mDNS. No guest networks or client isolation on the router.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2.4 GHz Wi-Fi<\/strong> with good coverage; if the Shelly is within range, the Pro range via Ethernet prevents dropouts. If, on top of that, the GX doesn\u2019t have good coverage, a <a href=\"https:\/\/fvcomponentes.com\/en\/product\/monitoring-victron-cerbo-gx-4\/\">GX LTE 4G modem<\/a> terminates the connection to the VRM.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Static IP or DHCP allocation<\/strong> For every Shelly: fewer surprises after a router reset.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Updated Shelly firmware<\/strong> and Shelly\u2019s cloud service can remain active: the GX communicates with the device locally, not via the cloud.<\/li>\n<li>In the GX: <em>Settings \u2192 Integrations \u2192 Shelly<\/em>, switch on the device and assign it the <strong>role<\/strong> (AC consumption, PV inverter, heat pump, generator, etc.).
