Its technical specifications make it the right choice in virtually all scenarios:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Exceptional chemical stability:<\/strong> with no risk of thermal runaway under normal conditions of use. The safest of the lithium chemistries.<\/li>\n<li><strong>3,000\u20135,000 cycles<\/strong> at a discharge depth of 80%.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wide operating temperature range:<\/strong> -20\u00b0C to +60\u00b0C (discharge), 0\u00b0C to +45\u00b0C (charge).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Compatible with Victron\u2019s DVCC protocol<\/strong> via VE.Bus (Victron NG batteries) or CANbus (Pylontech, Pytes).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2b50 <strong>Recommended for:<\/strong> any new solar installation, whether domestic, commercial or for a camper van.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-40mjxceo elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"40mjxceo\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-whqj3jvr\" data-id=\"whqj3jvr\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a7f3fgku elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a7f3fgku\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">NMC \u2014 Nickel, manganese and cobalt<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-u9a61m4p elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"u9a61m4p\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Higher energy density than LiFePO\u2084 (more kWh per kg), making it popular in electric vehicles where weight is a critical factor. However, it is less chemically stable (greater risk of thermal runaway) and has a shorter cycle life (1,000\u20132,000 cycles).<\/p>\n<p>In fixed solar installations, where weight is not a determining factor, <strong>LiFePO4 outperforms NMC in terms of safety, longevity and total cost<\/strong>. The problem: very low energy density (it requires twice the volume for the same amount of energy) and very high cost. Its niche lies in critical industrial applications.<\/p>\n<p>For residential or campervan use, <strong>beyond one\u2019s means<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-258afg0a elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"258afg0a\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-gk1e8p6q\" data-id=\"gk1e8p6q\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-is8daos5 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"is8daos5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-kw3xpyrf elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"kw3xpyrf\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-gtlbnpl6\" data-id=\"gtlbnpl6\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-49selpea elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"49selpea\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The BMS: the most important component that nobody mentions<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-kcl4wxzz elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"kcl4wxzz\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A LiFePO4 battery without a suitable BMS (Battery Management System) is a battery that will degrade prematurely or, in the worst-case scenario, a dangerous battery.<\/p>\n<p>The BMS has three key functions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Cell protection:<\/strong> It detects and cuts off the charging or discharging process if a cell exceeds the voltage, temperature or current limits.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Balance:<\/strong> It balances the load between cells to maximise the pack\u2019s total capacity and prevent weak cells from limiting the performance of the others.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Communication with the investor:<\/strong> In systems with DVCC, the BMS transmits the charge\/discharge limits to the inverter\/charger in real time. This is what sets Victron systems apart.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Integrated BMS vs External BMS<\/h3>\n<p>High-quality batteries (Victron LiFePO4 NG, Pylontech, Pytes) come with a built-in BMS. You don\u2019t need to buy or set up anything else.<\/p>\n<p>Low-cost batteries without an integrated BMS or with a generic BMS lacking a standard communication protocol require the charging parameters to be configured manually on the inverter \u2014 and without real-time feedback, the margin for error is considerable.<\/p>\n<h3>Victron DVCC Protocol<\/h3>\n<p>When DVCC is enabled on the Cerbo GX and the battery has a BMS that can communicate (via VE.Bus or CANbus), the following occurs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The BMS sends the exact values of <strong>CCL<\/strong> (Charge Current Limit) and <strong>DCL<\/strong> (Discharge Current Limit) in real time.<\/li>\n<li>The inverter automatically adjusts its charging current in accordance with these limits.<\/li>\n<li>If the BMS detects a problem (hot cell, overheating), it can cut the load in a controlled manner without shutting down the entire system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The result is a system in which the battery actively protects itself, rather than relying on fixed parameters set manually.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6lz8lpl6 elementor-align-left elementor-widget elementor-widget-button\" data-id=\"6lz8lpl6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"button.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-button-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-button elementor-button-link elementor-size-sm\" href=\"\/en\/victron-support\/\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-button-content-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-button-text\">Do you have any questions about the BMS + Victron setup? Always install the same model and add modules from the same manufacturer.<\/p>\n\n<h3>What happens if the temperature drops below 0\u00b0C?<\/h3>\n<p>LiFePO4 batteries must not be charged at temperatures below 0\u00b0C \u2014 this can cause lithium metal to deposit on the anodes, which permanently damages the cells. Discharging is, however, permitted down to -20\u00b0C.
